The test is usually performed after placement and compaction of trench backfill and prior to restoration of the surface. The Manholes must be clean. Manhole testing is performed by creating a vacuum in the manhole and monitoring a gauge for vacuum loss. If a loss does occur, then there is likely to be a leak. Leaks need to be located and then repaired. Williams Testing provides chemical grouting to stop leaks in leaking manholes. See Grouting section under Pipe Rehabilitation.

Williams Testing has both the plate style and bladder style vacuum testers. The plate style seals the frame or top of the manhole cone. The bladder style unit seals inside the frame, either above or below the grading rings.
