Air Testing of new PVC Sanitary Sewer Pipes

Williams Testing provides independent low-pressure air testing of new pipes ranging in size from 6” up to 24” in diameter.

On new construction projects, it is normally required that all sewer lines are pressure tested to verify the integrity of the pipe (line acceptance test). A line acceptance test generally is performed to establish the tightness of a section of newly laid sewer pipe. The Test is performed to meet local county standards and guidelines. Final testing is carried out under the direction and supervision of the local utility inspector and project engineer.

The test is usually performed after placement and compaction of trench backfill and prior to restoration of the surface. The pipes must be clean. The plugs are inserted in the pipeline at each manhole and are inflated in accordance with Manufacturer’s recommendations. All outlets and laterals are capped and sandbagged off. The plugging of laterals is the responsibility of the pipeline contractor.

Low pressure is then introduced into the pipeline until the pressure reaches the pre-specified psig. A specific drop in air pressure, within a pipe section, over a specified length of time determines acceptance or failure of the line in question. When a drop in pressure is recognized, a segment test can be performed to isolate the leak. Williams Testing also provides Segment Testing services.
